Reflections on Week One at the Park
(Whiskeytown National Recreation Area)
A big burn, Yes
And blackened trees
But also, that distinct sweet smell from pine tree resin: vanilla.
Calm, clean reservoir
But rugged mountains:
Shasta Bally
Clear Creek Canyon
With its cold, swift water
And, that subtle, beautiful sound of mountain water.
History burned
History uncovered
By the fire.
Strolling quietly, reflectively through the cemetery
Getting served a piece of humble pie there.
The environmental school saved
But closed.
Green sprouts up from the blackened landscape.
And I think I am going to like it here
This land of still and rugged beauty
This land of black and green.
