With Distance in His Eyes
The Environmental Life and Legacy of Stewart Udall
Book Reviews
“This carefully researched, absorbing biography documents the remarkable environmental legacy of Stewart Udall. Einberger offers extensive notes validating the material in each chapter. He also draws several perceptive conclusions about Udall’s lifework, not the least of which is that he served ‘as a model for “working together” and bipartisanship.’ This is a relevant biographical study of a significant American environmentalist.”

“Udall is a huge figure in the history of postwar environmentalism in America, and it is quite shocking how few book-length treatments have been devoted to his enduring influence and legacy, which continue to reverberate in today’s politics and policy. With Distance in His Eyes is certainly a significant and much needed addition to the study of one of the most important advocates for the environment in the twentieth century.”
- Brian Drake, University of Georgia
“A thorough, delightful book about a truly inspirational public servant. Scott Einberger’s biography couldn’t be more timely, arriving just at the time that we need something to help dispel today’s dispiriting cynicism about the role and possibilities of government.”
- Peter Harnik, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Co-founder, Author, and Activist
"I enjoyed With Distance in His Eyes very much. It is a good reminder of what can be accomplished by motivated leaders that have strong values, employ strategic thinking, and have a supportive public."
- Robin West, Assistant Regional Director (Retired), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
"With Distance in His Eyes is an impressive dive into the life and times of a Western native son...Readers of Scott Einberger's definitive new biography will appreciate the impact this great figure had during a bygone era of political bipartisanship and civil discourse."

This full length, scholarly biography documents the writings and works of the most successful U.S. Secretary of the Interior in history. Udall's personal involvement in expanding the National Park System, creating the Endangered Species Preservation Act, cleaning up urban blight through beautification, and emphasis on tackling global warming are all analyzed.
